X-Files - Un-identified Fiberglass Buggies RegistryFinally! A place to register your X-File Buggy. If you don't know the manufacturer of your buggy, add it to the "New X-Files" registry with some identification thumbnails. Once we get two or more identical buggies, we will create a unique registry for those entries and add them to the ID process. If we get a positive ID, the entries will move to the appropriate mfg registry

BERMOCO # 0002
| Body |
I beleive I have a Bermoco HTV buggy. I just got it a few weeks ago. Its pretty rusted up but the body is in great shape. I got it from a guy who was a shop teacher in Monterey Ca. He said the guy he got it from made it, it was the 2nd one they built, and they built it extra thick for racing. It is a 2 pc. hood, dash are one pc. and the windsheild bolts to hood/dash. I was told somewhere there was a tag stating my htv was #2. Sure nuf underneath on what looks like apc. of masking tape #0002. I've looked at the ads on your site, I just took a fiberglass roof off of mine looks identical to the one on the ad. My headlights are mounted to the fenders but not on any raised mounts like the photo in the ad, just holes drilled in the fenders not straight up but at an angle towards the hood. Plus the back of mine wraps around the back of the motor like none I've ever seen. Its a hatch that I don't have but I have someone looking for it. It came flush with the body and it still has a zues fastener on each corner. Something they would have for racing, for the quick access. They aren't kiding this body is 3/8th of an inch thick, and a half inch in someplaces. It also has 2 battery boxes, underneith rear seat area, Another race thing. Here's the I.D. number I guess the highway patrol stamped there, 4607245. It has Ca. blue plates # 425 BDQ. And it has 64 Impala taillights, one on each side. Me, and my buddy that owns a Manx both think its a Bermoco Race HTV Buggy. I'll send pictures as soon as I can. If you have any information on the owners of the co. or anyone that worked there, I'd like to talk to someone that knows about this car!

Trucker from Victoria Canada bought it while in California in the late 1960's early 1970's. Stored in a crate for many years before being built. Passed to nephew in estate then to me through an auction house. Bought it in mid july of 2008 but can't seem to identify the heritage of this unique buggy. Original owner referred to it as a "California Special" but so far I have been unable to confirm what it really is.

Acquired 15 years ago. Being towed to the junkyard and I purchased this from the owner for $100.00. This sat for 12 years and I finally put it together. Modified rear lights. Had '68 Camaro lights. Has wiring harness tube on the driver's side running to the rear. Has no ID tag. Body was metallic blue with metal flake. Hood scoop and side pods were not molded in. They are part of the car. If anyone can tell me what this is, I would appreciate it. Email me!

| Story |
I was tipped off by a co-worker about the location of this dune buggy. It was built in 1971 on a 67' Chassis. The man who built it passed away in 1981 and it was then parked in the garage. It was only barely driven between 1971 and 1981. I have receipts that show the local VW dealership did much of the work on the build. The ODO reads 59k miles, and the 67' Sedan was crashed with 51k on it when it was 4 years old. The original tires are like new, and are mounted on Appliance/ Pacer wheels. The engine is stock 1500 single port from the 67' sedan (I have a vintage single port Kadron set-up to install), every else mechanical is 100% stock also.

X-0004 RegistryX-0004 has a large oval opening in the front of the hood reminding us of a Cobra. The rest of the hood is smooth. Fenders are standard flat in the front and the tail has a large box with rounded sides. It could be called a double box as there is a faint outline of a second box.
X-0005 RegistryX-0005 has headlights built into the front of the fenders, an opening hood and a flip up tail. The center of the dash extends all the way down to the original tunnel.

The rear fenders are very distinctive and lack any kind of ridge between the fender and the inner body.
This may be a Fiber Jet Rough Terrain.

| Story |
The car was originally titled in AZ before moving to CA where it lost it's pan and was retitled before moving to NV. I bought it from the owner in NV and brought it back to AZ. The sides are made of diamond plate aluminum and act to give about a 5" lift to the body as the fiberglass ends well above the "pan". Since I live about 20 minutes from the Imperial dunes it gets driven in the sand a lot but I've kept it street legal and when all is well with it it's my daily driver. Right now however it's undergoing a major motor swap from a 1776vw to a 2.3 Turbo Ford. (Still dealing with some radiator and clutch issues.) Soon I'll also be swapping in a bus transmission and some beefy trailing arms to help deal with my driving in the dunes ;)

X-0010 RegistryThis buggy has the basic Manx styling. From the pictures, I think I can make out a badge like bump on the hood. It has a very wide and shallow tail box. It has a unique square custom made fuel tank and the area under the hood reflects this (as opposed to a standard VW tank opening). It also looks like the hood can be removed while leaving the dash attached to the body. This could be a feature of the buggy or something the original owner decided to do.

|
X-0012 RegistryThe keys to look at on this body are the seat bottom area. It is completely flat no tool, or tire well or battery box. Also the rear seat back area above the tail.
Very wide like a Spatz rear. The EAST COAST laws required full engine coverage after 1970. The low sides should be a clue to.
The molded fiberglass dash is often found on cheaper bodies as they just pulled a copy of the ABS dash but couldn't make one of ABS in the boat shop they
Another unique feature of the body you didn't mention that may help with identification is the rear deck/shelf area behind the rear seat. Much bigger and flatter than a Manx.
Look closely and you'll notice the sides are too low to be a exact clone.
Lo Cash John's Orphan
|
|
| Body |
The body is sort of a Manx type clone with some noteable differences. First, the hood is totally smooth with no center ridge or bump for an emblem. Next, the sides are cut a bit lower than a true Manx (See photo) In the rear, the deck is longer than a Manx and shaped differently (See photo) Above the transaxle, there are no indents for a spare tire or battery. This area is totally flat. I suspect this was a low quality splash mold buggy built by a short lived "manufacturer". My reasoning is the fiberglass quality seems a bit low. The corners (if you can call them that) of the lower tub are poorly formed and will take quit a bit of glass work to make them seal to the floor pan. Also the thickness seems a little irregular in several places.
Regardless, it's cool looking and for $50 you can't go wrong.

| Story |
I picked up this body about 2 years ago for $50. I didn't exactly tell my wife about it and stashed it at a buddy's house. This summer, while at The VW Classic, my wife saw a Manx and said "a buggy would be really fun to have for nice days". I then fessed up about the body being at my buddy's place. Once she got over me buying a "car" without telling her (since when does 30 lbs of fiberglass constitute 'a car'?) she got pretty excited about the build. Look in the "Build Advice" forum for build photos and technical data.

X-0013 RegistryX-0013 has a unique hood with a single narrow ridge that melds into a badge bump on the very nose. The bump is round on the bottom with straight sides and a point on the top where it meets the ridge. The rest of the body resembles a Manx.

I bought this car from a friend of mine of mine 2 years ago. He found it on Ebay and drove out to Michigan to buy it. When he told me he was selling it, I just had to buy it! I have owned numerous dune buggies in the past and still have a collection of them. This car today only has 1600 original miles since it was built back in 1969. It is truly a great ride!

This body is a Late Tail Box Sears Rascal. The Single Ridge hood and the rounded edge tail box, is a match to a Glitterbug but, the Dash is the key here. X-0020 RegistryThe X-0020 looks a lot like a Dunbar Mini-Volks.
The only difference is the dash. The Minivolks dash is angled toward
the driver. The X-0020 buggy (whatever it is... Possibly another Ranger {not
the Ranger we have in the system though} has a dash that is
perpendicular to the ground... Almost perfectly vertical. Also, the
center portion of the X-0020 dash bulges out toward the driver. It appears the
MiniVolks is completely flat.
X-0020 #1
| Body |
John identified this as a *MiniVolks* body, but it is now back as an X-File do to differences with the Mini-Volks.
Traditional Manx style. No bump or recess for emblem. Hood and dash are one and is seperate from the body. The rear end of the body is fairly low, with a shallow but tall box section. the headlight mounting area of the body is tapered back into the body and not the typical cylinder out-cropping you find on the Manx.

Someone I work with was listening in on a conversation about a newly acquired pipe bender and the buggy I might just build for my 140 HP corvair engine. He interjected that he "had one of those". I thought he was talking about the pipe bender. Was I ever wrong! Nestled in the corner of his garage was my new buggy. The original title says it was built right here in CT. The original owner must have driven around for 4 years and then it sat with a buggered transaxle since 1974 (as evidenced by the registration stickers on the rear plate). 32 years later, it was on my trailer getting a new lease on life.

X-0033 RegistryX-0033 may be a buggy manufactured by Bermoco. It has a hood very similar to an EMPI Imp. The fenders are missing the standard headlight stand offs. The tail has a very slight tail box while the dash is all fiberglass and it is integral with the hood.
X-0034 RegistryX-0034 has a unique hood with a ridge, a diamond and two spurs coming off the diamond. The mounts for the headlights may be of Dunbar design.
X-0035 RegistryFor the X-0035, the hood looks like a Spatz but the rest is way different. The step in the side is very unique. Spatz style flat topped rear fenders and tail box are like a Spatz...but those sides are certainly NOT Spatz.
X-0036 RegistryThis buggy looks a lot like a Sand Dancer Brougham T, but it has a double tail box.
