Unknown Year Ocelot buggy
Body |
The body is very rough right now. There are very nasty cracks between the front wheel wells and the windshield posts. The buggy had been painted metallic green at one time but now is covered in badly cracked and peeling red. I will be doing all the resto work myself as money and time allows.
|
Frame |
I believe the frame is a shortened beetle one. The floor seems pretty solid but after removing the body I have found a lot more rust than I expected. I don't know how that will come out but I am going to try to save it.
|
Engine |
Here is a bright spot for my new project. I am not very VW savy, but intend to learn as much as possible. I know that the engine was in a VW bus and had been rebuilt with a performance cam, oversize jugs and dual carbs. I have come to the impression that it is an older engine because the flywheel was converted from 6 volt to 12.?. It currently has all of the heat ducting on the engine but the outlets are plugged with fence post caps......well it seemed to work for them. The exhaust is a 4 tip monza system that has rusted out under both heads. I got the engine running after a few hours of working on fuel lines and cleaning out the carbs. The little thing runs awesome which is much more than I can say for its looks.

Status |
In pieces waiting for a clutch. The engine is in the shop where I work and the frame and body are sulking in a field next to the shop.

Story |
I have always wanted a buggy and found out that my boss had one sitting in his garage that he had owned for several years. I went and took a look at the car and found it to be in fixable shape and we agreed on a trade. I traded a gas powered air compressor for his buggy and hauled it away on a trailer. The car had custom diamond plate aluminum running boards, nice chrome wheels and nearly 15 year old brand new tires. LOL. My boss had rebuilt the entire brake system, tuned up the engine, bought new tires and wheels and promptly drove the buggy home and parked it in the garage and never moved it again for nearly 15 years. The interior had been removed and sold, the roll bar is gone and one headlight cover is missing. Other than that the car is complete. I had the car at my house for a couple of years until moving when somebody stole the running boards during the chaos, so before I finished moving I had it towed to the shop where I work. I guess I did them a real favor too as I had the body just sitting on the frame and the running boards thrown inside while I was moving everything. Oh well. That's pretty much where the car is right now. I've got the engine out to replace the clutch and then hopefully get some seats and at least be able to drive it around a bit. I want to tinker with it but mostly want to get it out and drive around the rod runs and stuff that happen around here. I'll do updates and post pics as I go through this.....should be fun.

I bought it from Dave Mattoon in Connecticut . It had been sitting up in a barn for about 20 years. I towed it back to Florida and started rebuilding it. I am only trying to get it functionally correct, not show quality at this time.

i bought the car from a guy in new jersey and he had to weedwack around the engine it was sitting in the weeds so long the car had no floors whatsoever was totally rusted shot from sitting and missing every piece but the body frame engine and trans . . . . by the way i never rebuilt the motor it was sitting outside in the weeds open exhausts and open carb. it took a little while to get compression back but she ran like she did so many years ago. noe its in florida with me and im getting closer to finishing. the parts are cheap but when you are replacing absolutely everything its not so cheap it is a labor of love

As of June '08 I have begun work on the Ocelot again. By the end of Summer I hope to have all of the chassis work done like the floors, undercoating, suspension, etc...I will try and wire it up during the Fall so I can just pick up an engine and install it Spring 2009. We'll see what happens.

Story |
I bought the body from a friend who found it in Connecticut. According to the instruction booklet I got with the body, there was a Sand Chariots dealer there. This could be why I got an NOS body, sidepods, windshield and two dashboards.
On June 28th 2008 I sold the sidepods to a gentleman from New Jersey who owns an original purple metalflake Ocelot.
