B&N Fiberglass Registry (View all registry entries)

B&N Fiberglass of Springfield Ohio created several body styles during the dune buggy hay day. For some reason unknown to us, they preferred to use the names of snakes for the buggies. The most famous of their buggies was the Rattler. A unique detailed body kit with a classic structure but, very different in style and design.

Dunbar Registry (View all registry entries)

Dunbar was a very popular Nor Eastern maker. I have seen what appears to be the same model they built as the MiniVolks advertised as the Hawk, after "Hawk" Harrelson, the big baseball star, ordered and endorsed them.

I am not sure about the Hawk II?

The Minivolks was one of the first buggies to use what I call the East Coast hood. Many of the small makers who were trying to manufacture the cheapest kit they could, made a hood that had the dash molded into it as one part. It had no convex curves since that would be impossible to pull from a mold. The hood flared at the edges to grab on to the body sides in front of the windshield frame. The dash was usually very flat or had a ridge line molded in.

Dunbar liked to have scoops on the hood. Check out the Beverly Hills to see them up close. The big signature to these bodies though is what I call an exaggerated tail design. The rear fenders have a low, almost mud flap, built in to them. The whole tail has a long low extended look. More engine coverage. East Coast DMV laws were much stricter than the west coast. NJ, CT, DE and others required tire and engine coverage. Many of the 1972 motor vehicle laws nationwide adopted these rules and it was the beginning of the end of buggy production.

Manx SR and SR2 Registry (View all registry entries)

Now, the ultimate in road-going fun cars. Imagine the economy, compactness and maneuverability of the original famous Meyers Manx sports buggy combined with the sophisticated sleekness of European Gran Turismo styling. Well, that's the new Meyers Manx SR. It looks expensive, but not expensive to build. It's practical to own because weather protection (and all government safety code provisions) has been designed in so the car may be used year-round. Luggage space is provided in front under the hood , and inside, behind the seats. It's a custom sports car, at less than economy car prices. Please see the Manx SR site at http://www.manxsr.com/

Rascal Registry (View all registry entries)

The Rascal was a named used for advertising purposes by Sears during the dune buggy heyday. The early model they sold was built by a company called Terra Buggy. The body had a standard Manx tub with the small tail opening similar to monocoque Manx. The hood carried a single ridge down the center with no emblem bump or otherwise raised features. The dash has a distinct arm that was stretched to the passenger side to accommodate a radio or other gauges. The Late tail rascal included a box design above the center carb area that was more styled like a Glitterbug tail. There is no known link or connection between the Glitterbug and the Rascal. It also appears that during the court copy write battles of 70-71 the Manx was advertised as available from Sears. As far as I know there is only one person in the US who has a Manx he picked up at Sears.

JC Penny got on the buggy bandwagon with the sale of serial numbered EMPI Imps. Wards carried the Bandit dune buggy in the catalog they produced.

Shortie Manufacturing Registry (View all registry entries)

This body was made by Shortie Mfg. in Monson, Ma. I spoke with a fiberglass fabricator near there who knows the brothers who built it and remembers quite a few in the northeast. There were two business cards glassed into the underside of the body stating the name of the manufacturer. The rear is a box style and the dash is molded in Fiberglas as part of the hood. It has one well under the rear seat for the battery. It is pretty much 100% a clone of the Sand Rover body sold by Joe Poty East.
