B&N Fiberglass Registry

B&N Fiberglass of Springfield Ohio created several body styles during the dune buggy hay day. For some reason unknown to us, they preferred to use the names of snakes for the buggies. The most famous of their buggies was the Rattler. A unique detailed body kit with a classic structure but, very different in style and design.

Story I've owned VWs on and off my whole life. Stock beetles, a couple of rail buggies. I always wanted to build a dune buggy, one day while at Advance Auto Parts an employee told me about one he saw for sale. I bought it that afternoon, it's cracked, faded, been cut on, and been repainted numerous times. It had all the signs of an orginal 60's buggy: 1964 Mustang tail lights, Dodge charger gas cap, metal flake base. Thanks to Dune Buggy.com I was able to ID it, " Thanks Guys". I bought a 1967 Baja Bug that has seen it's better days, rusted out, beat up and ugly. It had an valid title, good running. So after buying alot of manuals, countless hours on internet, and now knowing the UPS man by his first name it's taking shape. 67 pan looks new and after installing the new brake lines, it'll be time to tackle the body, more "How to books" this time on fiberglass repair, more UPS visits and telling my wife she'll have her carport, porch, and spare bedroom back soon, the body and pan will be united. I've made mistakes, got mad, but would do it again in a heartbeat.

Story I bought her for $750 running with a slippery clutch in 1974 in South Carolina...my first car purchase. Drove her through college and met some nice ? girls as a result. Later tore her down and rebuilt her doing an extensive stripe job using multiple masks to shoot metalflake red and then fine flake gunmetal grey for the stripes... hours and hours.Clear coated the whole thing with about 14 layers of clear acrylic and a couple of years later had some blisters form on the forward fender fronts. Sandblasted the pan welded in plate in place of the rusted floor pans...then had a layer of roofing tar poured into the pans to seal everything watertight. Ultimately she ended up being a bit heavy...better for street...offroad not so much. I welded reinforcements on many suspension parts and created tranny straps.
I went into this project knowing very little and learned a lot. Should have done more with the engine but she was strong and pretty being well chromed out. I had a book 'Building Your VW Based Dune Buggy' and kept Bug Pack in business for a few years.
Details: Put in dual independent hand brakes for spin arounds. Glassed in the area under the sides to collect less mud under the arm rest area. Never did get away from the original 6v system so a did lot of push starts over the years (dum dum dum dum dum).
Later I moved her to AZ then to CA where I went sailing and temp traded her to a friend who sold her. Lost track afterwards.
I just found what I am convinced to be her ID as the B&N 'Tarantula' from the rear deck over the engine and rear fender curves and height/width. The two hood bumps would confirm better but they aren't visible in the archive B&Ws. All the visible body shapes match up with my former baby.

Viper Registry

Another of the bodies B&N made was called the Viper. The Viper at first glance was very manx like. There were two raised long features in the hood. Like 3D stripes I guess. Very distinct, no other body copied these hood details. The other very distinct and individual treatment was the headlight mounting, or really the lack there of. This body is the only one I know of that used standard round buckets with sealed beam but, made a semi circular recess to mount them low into the hood. No pedestals for the chrome buckets to stand on. The tail was a semi standard mild flip, with a license box raised. I am not sure if there were indentions around the lights or not. Our photos are not that clear. The only documentation from B&N is a photo copy of a mimeographed single sheet with a front view of the buggy body, circa 1969.
