In any event there is a thread on the samba titled something about a 4x4 conversion.
it might be worth checking out. The guy talks about what he figured out with reversing the subi tranny.

The guy is also talking about having a reverse cut R&P done! I thought it might be pretty exciting news to anyone considering or wanting to use a scoobie gear box.

Don't want to put a downer on the conversation - but I'm guessin the cost of that custom ring and pinion gearset is going to really put a damper on the party.  I have no doubt it could be done, just takes $$$$$$!

On a similar note, the GT40 replica guys had a custom R&P gearset made up to go into the popular Audi 016 transaxle - this would lower the overall ratios so all 5 gears were really usable in their hi-torque V8 cars.  Mass produced, the gearsets were running over $1200, not including installation.  However, I believe the guy that initiated the custom R&P production dropped a bunch more money than that just to get them into production.  Keep in mind, these guys start out with a $30-40K kit, without engine, drivetrain, wheels plus putting it together!  Different league...
