I have a dune buggy that I use for parades so it has to idle long periods of time without over heating. The engine I have in it now is a 1845cc with a hot cam 2bl carb with runs good at the beginning of the parade but after a while I'm doing all I can to keep it running. Looking for a new set up!!

So the topic title says you need HP but the body of the post talks about parades.....
IMO if one wants a reliable motor that doesn't need to be the fastest bug on the road I'd build a stock 1600DP. Ok add electronic ignition and such but the rest stock.
When I was I kid I put over 100,000 miles on my beetle, all stock.
When I did my last buggy 1600DP has been as reliable as a hammer. All tins in place and I've sat in mid summer FLORIDA traffic jams for hours and survived it no issues.
Just my .02
All the best.

A nice stock(ish) 1600 with a mild cam, a good merged header, electronic ignition, dual carbs and a lightened flywheel will be reliable and quick.
