I am getting conflicting information as to the correct firing order for my buggy
So first thing I should do is determine correct year of the engine anyone know how to do this then once I have correct year where can I get the Fireing order information? Any help would be great

Look for the serial number located at the base of the alternator/generator stand.
If I recall correctly most VW type 1 motors were 1432

Search SAMBA they have a complete engine and trans code break down list.
I thinks these guys may have some info also:

Ok all appears to be right but still no go no matter what I do it just pops and farts and smokes but won't run
I'm sure my engine is a type one but to be sure here is my engine number can some one confirm it for me?
if it helps I have a 009 distributer so if this is correct the firing order shoud be as above 1432 but it just won't fire any other ideas?
I put the engine to tdc and started the spark leads from number one according to the rotor placement

Well there could be lots and lots of things. First...the #1 cylinder is on the passenger side towards the front of the car. Then # 2 is on the passenger side towards the rear. #3 is drivers side front and #4 is drivers side rear.
If thats correct then I suggest the follwowing:
1. Valves adjusted?
2. Points adjusted correctly?
3. Plugs not fouled?
4. Carb adjusted correctly?
5. Have you played with the timing?
6. Are you sure you are at TDC and not 180 off?

TDC notch is for the compression stroke of the engine, you have on a four stroke engine a second position which is the TDC notch is aligned but during exhaust stroke...
If you use the exhaust stroke for you position of setting the you will be sputtering but not start.
Remember the distributor runs at half speed. of the engine.
Compression stroke TDC will have both valves close on cylinder number one.
Verify with your 1 valves closed that your distributor is still showing plug wire #1

And the winer is Ron s
Lol thanks that's what it was wrong TDC it runs but needs a little tuning so that's the next job
Anyone got a good spot to take the power from for the electric choke
The previous owner never had it connected

Hey wait a minute.......my number 6 was wrong TDC? I should be able to share the winners spot at least!
You can take power from the coil...I would fuse it though given the way the choke works.
