Topic Public / Dune Buggy Build Advice / Windshield needs groove to receive a bikini top (8507 hits)
My buggy has a plane windshield frame, there is no groove running along the top that a canvas or vinyl top would fit into. I want to install a small bikini top. Can a groove be purchased and installed or would I have to purchase a new windshield and frame that has a groove??? Has anyone run into this problem and if so how was a top fastened to the top of the windshield???? I'm not sure there is enough room to install snaps along the windshield frame.
Any suggestions, ideas or suppliers to shop for a windshield wold be appreciated. Jim B. Attachment: DSC00337.JPG (83.2k)

ditto what KJ says. If there is a black rubber on the backside. it is probably groove filler
Thanks for the input. There is no groove any where on my frame. I did however find a guy the makes tops for boats and he has an aluminum extrusion piece that can be fastened to my frame and it will receive a top. He says he uses it all the time on boat applications.
I'm going to have him fabricate a top and install it. I will let you all know how it turns out. Thanks again for your input and suggestions. Jim B
Look up Awning Rail and Welt. I used this similar setup for attaching a custom awning to my Vanagon.

Mike,
Thanks for the input. The site showed the exact piece of aluminum extrusion I found. I put it on the top of the windshield and had a boat canvas shop whip up a top. They did a nice job and it works great. Sorry it took so long to get back. I will attach a pic of the finished top...... Thanks again for the help Jim B. Attachment: DSC03026.JPG (162.3k)
