Hello All - I just aquired this buggy and cannot figure out who manufactured the body, can anyone help? Also, as you can see, I have a gas tank problem, any ideas?

I am not sure on an id, I'll look into it. There is one of these for sale on the Samba and the owner thinks it was a ''Crockey Preracer'' but I am sceptical of the name, he also had a post in the buggy forum of the samba discussing the body.  Here is the ad -  http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1169713

You have one of the types of bodies that had an integeral gas tank, Back n the day that was ok, however these days the Ethanol in modern gas creates issues with this configuraion.

The closest body I can think of that looks like this is a Bushmaster, but they had lower sides and used early Beetle headlights. I'll keep digging

Thanks for the help, I can use all of the advise I can get. I will look up the Crockey Preracer and check out the background. The rebuild starts as soon as school starts this fall and I can't wait. The gas tank is obviously an issue but that's why I bought a project. Again, any advise will be appreciated. Thanks again!

I have been researching the "Crockey Preracer" name and cannot find a thing. If anyone has any information on this name or discription, I would greatly appreciate hearing from your. The only tag under the body reads 181X. The name Crockey comes up, when searched, as midget racing. I also wondered if there was a connection to early baja racing. Again, any help or hints on where to look would be appreciated. Thanks

The name is only because of some literature offered on ebay a while back, I haven't seen the literature so the name is sort of an assumption.
The ad is still on ebay, perhaps they know something ?? here is the link, let us know

I contacted the guys at Autolit, which is the company selling the picture of the Crockey Preracer on ebay and they had no information about the buggy at all except to say it was a Crockey Preracer. I am completely stumped but at least I have a great project buggy. There is a tag under the front of the buggy with 181 - X, could that have some meaning?

It has some meaning I'm sure but it's no help as far as a manufacturer, a production number perhaps

I've almost come to the realization, the true manufacturer may not be found. However, it will make a great buggy when it's done.

Don't despair, the numbers that are on the dash are big clues, many of these bodies have no info on them at all - zip, nadda

I bought one just like it in September of this year.  I have also been trying to find out the maker of the fiberglass body. I will try to post some photos of mine.  I am looking for a new fuel cell and new bucket seats.
