ok , Found a 2.2 from a 98 Legacy wagon reasonably priced on Craigslist. I know nothing of this conversion so enlighten me.
If I was to buy this, it would be to put into a future father son project that is just a budget buggy and nothing trick or fancy.

All you need is a pile of these and the conversion will go without a hitch....

I'm afraid swapping to a Subaru engine will definitely put you into the "trick and fancy" category!  Can't avoid it.

Unfortunately there aren't any significant inexpensive shortcuts to this conversion.  In fact, the engine purchase itself may well be the cheapest part of the project!  The engine adapter kit will run a good 5 of those Ben Franklins (though the adapters can sometimes be picked up used).  Cooling system another few hundred (and up).  Add in custom chassis work and engine mounts to support the motor, exhaust system, custom intake and the big ticket item - the ECU conversion.  I'd budget a good $3K minimum to complete this swap - and that's doing a lot of bargain shopping.  Add in a well built transaxle to hold the torque so another $600-$1K or so.

Now factor in having to really learn all about the particular version of the Subaru engine you choose - how the idle control works, ignition system, sensors, PCV system, etc.  Since there is no "universal" buggy conversion kit out there - the builder has to decide what to do about all that "hardware" on the engine, that may or may not been needed on a buggy.  It takes a lot of changes to get from that crude looking lump under the car hood into a clean buggy-prepped engine like on the Outfront website!  Each and every change you make has trade-offs.

That said, I think it makes a great engine swap, just be aware of the costs up front and have the determination to see it through.  I've not heard of any person that completed the swap (or ridden in one) that regretted doing it!

What Jeff said X2.  He did not really mention the minor custom fabrication time, expense & aggravation.  But, if you persevere and pull it off, WOW!  Tom

I spent about $3,800 total on my buggy conversion but you can't even get close to the HP with a VW aircooled motor for that kind of money.
