first off, let me aplogize for not being able to link to the thread. (not on my computer)
In any event there is a thread on the samba titled something about a 4x4 conversion.
it might be worth checking out. The guy talks about what he figured out with reversing the subi tranny.

Do you have any idea how many threads are on Samba? I looked for over 1 hour....nothing. Oops I found it.
At my age.. Everything I buy comes with a lifetime guarantee..

yah... Gazillions of them. I was using an iPod touch to hit the Internet. 3.5" screen and no ability to cut and paste. Thanks for adding the link.
EDIT: Just clicked the link you added. Unfortunately, the situation is as you said... too many threads... that wasn't it I'm afraid.
Back on my computer now, so I can add a link: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=271863&sid=325f74d0bc9a23aed1adf36c241ab423
The guy is also talking about having a reverse cut R&P done! I thought it might be pretty exciting news to anyone considering or wanting to use a scoobie gear box.
Note to self [don't talk about a thread and fail to provide a link in the future]

Don't want to put a downer on the conversation - but I'm guessin the cost of that custom ring and pinion gearset is going to really put a damper on the party. I have no doubt it could be done, just takes $$$$$$!
On a similar note, the GT40 replica guys had a custom R&P gearset made up to go into the popular Audi 016 transaxle - this would lower the overall ratios so all 5 gears were really usable in their hi-torque V8 cars. Mass produced, the gearsets were running over $1200, not including installation. However, I believe the guy that initiated the custom R&P production dropped a bunch more money than that just to get them into production. Keep in mind, these guys start out with a $30-40K kit, without engine, drivetrain, wheels plus putting it together! Different league...
