Hello fellow buggers im new to the site looking for help on my barn find.
I was told its a 1966 chimp witch sits on a 63 chassis. Also the maker may have been Scott Mckenzie, would love some help here. It once had a corvair now has a 70 vw motor. ![]()
Can't say I've ever heard of a "Chimp" but it has all the lines of an Empi Sportster. Tail section is a little lower than a "normal" Sportster, but since they were hand built, it's possible the owner simply modified it.
Scott "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" McKenzie?
There is a article from Claim Jumper Magazine which talks about the Chimp, but I can't attach it to this message. Here is the 1st paragraph of the article: "One of the pioneers of dune running in the US was Scott McKenzie, a sportscar racer in the mid-1950s, and lifelong driver of off-road desert jeeps. By 1959 he had designed a VW-powered, jeep-type off-roader called the Chimp, and eventually built a total of ten or these vehicles for other 'trail rodders' in 1961.
Traveler1, I just bought a Chimp too. It has a 65 chassis and 65 Corvair 110hp engine. It spent most of its life in the Pismo Beach area. I'll be working on returning it to its original configuration, removing the roll cage, sandrail fuel tank, etc.
I've collected a 1961 Hot Rod Ideas, a July 1962 Four Wheeler, a July 1968 Sport Buggies and an article from the Summer 1996 Sand Sports magazine, all with articles on Scott McKenzie and the Chimp. Can you give me more information on the Claim Jumper magazine? who published it, which issue? BTW, McKenzie actually built and raced his first Chimp in 1959. One Chimp was actually entered in the first NORRA race, the Stardust 7-11 at Las Vegas in 1967 ![]() ![]() ![]()
