Just purchased a Buggy and we're in the process of getting it on the road. The Hurst shifter doesn't seem to be operating correctly. No matter how I set it up, I cannot get it to have reverse lockout (trigger down) and still shift 1-4 gears with any kind of ease. If I set it up for 1-4 gears there's no reverse lock out and it's easy to hit reverse by mistake.
How do I tell if it's a shifter problem or a car / transmission problem? I was thinking of removing it from the car with the bottom plate and bolting it in a vise to see if it will operate alone. Could the torque tube bushing be worn? How do I tell if it needs replacing?
The shifter itself looks to be in good shape, the bottom plate has signs of a little wear but not bad...
Does someone have an understanding of this and can point me in the correct direction?

You can check the shift rod bushing but removing the two 13mm bolts that hold the shifter in and remove them and remove the shifter. You should see a plastic bushing there.
Are you sure the baseplate is in correctly? It could be 180 degree off.

The bottom of the shifter looks like there was another kind of base plate attached to it at one time and had been cut / ground off.
Could this base plate that I have now be the wrong one for this shifter?

I know this sounds silly but just look at the bushing. If its not there or destroyed its bad. There is really not a lot of analysis on this fix. Broken or missing? Replace it.

I put the base plate in with the longer cut side on the right, and the shorter / taller side on the left.
Now I just found a picture online of a shifter that looks like mine, and it's baseplate has just a square opening in it and looks to be welded to the base of the shifter. Is this the base I should have?

Ss you have probably figured out that base plate with the ramps on it is the stock plate used with the stock shifter. According to the Hurst installation instructions that should be removed with the stock shifter and not used. I agree it looks like the bottom plate of your Hurst shifter is missing.
This may clear it up some for you.
