I've taken my heads off my engine. I'm about to install them so I went to order up some replacement Copper Head Gaskets. In placing my order the  sales person informed me that if I didn't modify the heads or the jugs I didn't need to us the copper gasket. In fact he informed me that VW never used a gasket between the head and jugs. Because this was the first time I had heard this I ordered them any way. What are your guys thought?

Sorry..original posts said "why you need them" but that was before I realized its 1200cc motor. Maybe you do. I would try here:

I used them twice and both times they leaked. Now I just use barrel shims on the bottom of the barrels. As long as you have at least .060" deck height (space between the top of the barrel and the top of the piston at TDC with the barrel torqued down) you don't need them. Even if you have to machine the heads to get a better sealing surface the change in compression will be negligible on small bore engines.
