Is my crankshaft pully to close to the case? When I had this engine (1961 1200cc 40hp) installed the two pulleys didn't line up. The generatore pully was pushed back toward the fan shroud, by quite a bit.

Jason, I don't have that old of an engine as mine is a 1971. The pulleys are in alignment. My crank pulley is about 3/16 to 1/4" away from the engine casing. The Generator pulley is pushed all the way back as far as it will go.
Are you sure the generator shaft keyway is not restricting the pulley from sliding all the way back against the generator? Just a thought. I originally started with a 1958 VW 36 hp engine and now 6 engines later I have a stock 1600, single carb, dual port (completely rebuilt) and I love it. Never did like that old 6 volt system. Is that an aftermarket filter kit? Large volume pump? What about your shroud/generator set up? All stock for that year?

Last night I did a lot of running around in trying to find out what I did 16 years ago. when I built this engine, I didn't relize that the set up for a stock 1961 1200cc had a 6v generator. Back then, when I put this engine together, I just put what I had on in. Back a little while ago I discovered the pulleys were not in-line. Thinking I had the wrong generator, I ordered another one. I know I wanted a 12v system so in the Mail I De-boxed my new 12v generator. The exact same one I already had. *Hand to face* disappointing. what I've realized is that I've mix and match my Generator parts. So what I have it a 6v pully on a 12v generator bolted up to the fan shroud using 6v tin. Attached is a couple pictures that might help find out if my crankshaft pully is to close to the engine case. What I can see in person and what I hope you can see in the picture is that the pully is very close to aftermarket oil filter attachment. I think I ordered this attachment from Larry's. I'll be contacting them to see if others have had this same issue. For my own peace of mind I still need to know if the spacing between the engine case and the pully is accurate. ![]() ![]()

im looking into this aftermarket filter pump kit. From Larry's off road. If you look at the pictures I just posted you can see that there is a thick spacer extending the pump out a little less then a 1/4 inch. I'm hoping that I can utilize this pump

You need to make sure you use the right backing plates for the application you have. The lower pulley should bottom out in the case. You can bring shims in to extend it out, but there is no real adjustment on how far it goes in. Make sure you are not using a sand seal pulley. That is not a spacer. That is the oil pump.
I found that the backing plate was for a 6v generator. I'm in the middle of ordering a new 12v backing plate.
In reference to the bottom pully I'm going to purchase a special shim/washer(see attached) I measured out a stock pully with a digital calipers and found that the pully in the picture(above) share the same mersurments. It seem that my alignment is off do to the mix up of parts associated with the generator pully. Thanks guys for your help. Attachment: image.png (828.7k)
Jason, Why are you going to space the pulley out?
We'll my thinking are : I like having the oil filter for cooling and mantence reasons. I figured out what I need to do to line the pulleys up. The only problem I have now is the relationship of the lower pulley and oil filter assembly. With the shims (attached above) I'll have just what I want.
I really am learning as I go. No expert here. This makes sense to me. What are your thoughts?
Well I might be confused here.
In your first post you said your generator pulley was pushed too far towards the shroud so the upper pulley and lower pulley were not in alignment. By shimming the lower pulley I think you are going to push it further out of alignment aren't you? Those pump/filter combo's are designed for stock pulleys so you shouldn't have a fit issue. So the shims would just seem to make your existing problem worse. Again...I might not understand your problem correctly though.
Every time I see a post where someone is having a problem with pulleys not lining up I ask if they are using a 38amp generator. The 38 amp generator is a Type II bus item used only a few years. Without the specific pulley and backing plate you have a hair pulling situation. The OP is apparently gone but maybe everyone else will take note for future reference.
