First annual VW Buggies on the Beach! 5/22 - 5/24!
Get ready to enjoy some beach camping and dune buggy riding!!!
Mark May 22-24 on your calendar for the 1st annual Buggies on the Beach, Amelia island Florida!
Saturday is a driving rally so come ready to get your dune buggy sandy!   Camping available at Little talbot Island state park.  Huguenot beach park has camping sites too!   You can even camp for *FREE* at Peters point, and Burney park (showers on site. One night only, no "RV's").  Westfalia heaven !! Just bounce between the two parks!
On Saturdays rally, all you'll pay is gas and park entrance fees. (A few bucks).
Schedule:
Friday, island time meet and greet show-shine at townies pizzeria.  5-pm until ?  Rally Saturday morning leaving 9 am sharp from Main Beach park.   Saturday morning will be a beach rally /poker run.  Stopping for cards along the way and playing your hand at the end.  $100 up for grabs!  We plan on hitting up as much north Florida Atlantic beach sand we can put our tires on!  If you'd like to let us know you're planning to attend go to the buggies on the beach Facebook page. 215 planning to attend so far!  Planned beach runs on South Amelia island where it's open and deserted! Huguenot beach park where we will surely draw a crowd, and a few other stretches in between.  You will also enjoy beautiful Spanish moss covered oak tree canopy driving, and hopefully plenty of May sunshine!

Finally, on Sunday there will be FREE all VW show, shine, and swap meet.  Show up early for the good deals!  Main beach park, Fernandina beach, Fla.  We have the whole grass field at our disposal.  Plenty of space for hundreds of cars.
So- get those projects done by mid April and put on some test miles! Then take the plunge and come to the beach for a nice relaxing Memorial Day weekend!
Comfort inn is steps away from Main beach park.
Heck, just show up Saturday morning and RIDE!   The more the merrier!  I think were gonna need more decks of cards... D-oh!

***GOOGLE MAPS CALLS IT "Wolf park" 32034. Not Main Beach park...  And locals call it Fernandina, not Amelia Island...

No, we have not looked into VW sponsors, however, Sunday will be a FREE event in a city park on the beach.  Hilltop has flyers.  We are working with a few local businesses for sponsorship.  A 50/50 raffle drawing will be held with proceeds going to Amelia island parks and recreation.

We are still in the planning stages, but the park IS reserved for an all VW show and shine on:
Sunday May 24th from 10 am to 4 pm.  Parks wants to do a skate contest...
There will be a 50/50 raffle plus awards.    Main Beach park.  Fernandina Beach.  Amelia island Florida.
That's CONFIRMED with parks and rec.   This will also be the DUNE BUGGY Rally point on Saturday morning.  In front of the skatepark.

Where else are you promoting and advertising this show? Is it buggies only or open to all VWs??

We gladly welcome sand rails and baja buggies to join the poker rally on Saturday. Baja bus? Anything that can hang on sand BUT STAY UNDER "15 mph".  If we get more than 52 we need more decks of cards!  We can't get too squirly and we hope to do this again with more privileges next time!  Huguenot is mostly packed sand, so its not a problem there, but south Amelia island gets loose in a few places.   If 4 people can pick up the back of your cruiser you qualify.  I advise against low riders there.   Admission to south beach park is $2 per person.  You could rally with us on the road parts only.  You won't miss any cards and still keep your ride sand and salt free.   Parking lots at all the beach parks.  Wash down available at final destination.
Sunday is a *FREE* ALL VW Show, Shine, and Swap at Main Beach Park.  Massive area available to park HUNDREDS of Volkswagen cars.  Prizes, trophies, and a 50/50 drawing.  Bring a shade umbrella and beach blanket!  The Ocean is literally steps away.   Nationally known Pin-striper attending!    Restaurants on site, plus a skatepark and putt putt for the kids!
Soon to be in Jacksonville folio magazine.  Etc.  City approved and locally sponsored.

Mike got a question, is there area where buggys will be on display be in shade of a park type setting or in a open area . Thanks Vince
By michael c 3832 Date 2015-05-07 13:03
It is an open field right up against the beach.  There is not usually much shade on the beach.  Palm trees don't give up much shade.
I again, advise you to bring a shade tent.
Google earth will give you a good idea what you are up against.
Our meeting at parks and recreation yesterday went well.  The entrance to the field will be at the corner of * Tarpon and Dolphin St.  There is limited ELECTRICITY available on the perimeter.  First come first served.
*** We MUST stay inside the sidewalk on the main field, and OUT of the parking lots.  Other than that the field is open game to anything VW.  We are calculating there is enough space for 250-300 VWs
Tom bush VW is bringing some new vw's.
Hilltop motors bringing a few oldies.
There is a playground and bathrooms putt-putt and a skatepark. And the beach- Memorial Day, volleyball nets...etc.
Updated schedule... Saturday night sunset cruise through fort clinch.  Meet at Rally point 6:30.  Departing around 6:50.  Sunset at Ft clinch 8:10.
P.S.  If you need or want a campsite at ft clinch, we have one available to a dune buggy owner.  $35 a night. Contact shorespainting@hotmail.com

Yea Im just above Tallahassee so its been going on here like that I wish we could tell if it was going to be in the late afternoon or pretty much a all day thing. Ive been looking so forward to this event.
By AMAC1680 Date 2015-05-16 13:08
Here's how I'm looking at it. The weather people have a hard enough time getting it right for the next two days much less next week. With those highs I'm thinking afternoon boomers then done.

Fingers crossed for a change in forecast!

Be Big,
AMAC

Yea your right Im bringing a 10 x 10 pop up tent any way thought about it this morning setting it up behide the buggy and it I had to roll the buggy under it to give me time to get the top up ect. I think if we get anything hopefully it will be in the late after noon when things are winding down.
By michael c 3832 Date 2015-05-19 20:53
The weatherman here says 10% rain.  Just like today, 4:45 pm thunder may occur.  This island has a strange convection flow that makes those evening storms sometimes split and miss or graze us.   Consider weights or sandbags for the 10x10 tents.  The Ocean breeze here is sometimes stiff.
If we have to wrap it up early due to incoming evening storms we will do exactly that. (Just like no-dough)  thanks Doppler radar!!!
This grass field should hold 250 cars comfortably and is well drained.    You get plenty of space to set your party and grill up. Tent in front, beside, or behind your ride.
I really don't think weather will be an issue.
By Vince P 3261 Date 2015-05-19 20:55
Yea I saw the weather 10 day it has gotten better so thats a good thing IM bringing something to tie my tent down with for sure.

Thanks for everyone attending!  We had a blast. The poker run winner racked up $310 with three or a kind. 666 Eeek! He and his grandson re-donated $100 of it to parks and recreation!
Sunday was great weather at a beautiful ocean view venue.  82 vw cars showed and a few old gems we welcomed in!
The winning buggy was a Steve's cobalt metalflake Sears Rascal.  This restoration was recently finished and it looked fantastic in the sun.   He won people's choice first place and it was the dune buggy bros #3 pick.  He got the big peoples choice trophy and a framed issue of Vol. 1  issue 3 hot VW magazine.
First and second got those issues respectively.
The results and pics will be posted soon.
