Hello all, After many years wanting to get into vw's/dune buggys, i finally lucked out and found my first project.
Its a Allison daytona thats been sitting for 15+ years. I don't have any pictures of it yet, but i stole a pic of one off here that looks identical. Mine has pretty much been stripped at one point. Can someone tell me if a stock type 1 gas tank will fit? i know the neck needs to be relocated. Are the signal lights/tail lights factory vw? does anyone have a template of the rear seat? mine has no interior..

Glad to have you I have a Allison to cant wait to see pic of yours,  word of advice since you have to put a gas tank in yours might want to ex-spearmint (sp) with it sitting in there. THe reason being that the slant of the tank sitting in the body might not allow that much fuel usage. I can only go about 100 miles before I top off again. Which is useally 3.5 to 4 gal. Mine has a new tank that was put in by two owners back. But being that the steering components pass close underneath there may not be much that could be done. I ran out of gas one time and I could see gas in the tank. I use a paint stir stick and have marks on one inch a part. One day in ran out again in my shop and I stuck the tank and it showed 2 inches on the stick, so that gas is getting trapped in that area . I wondering if the nipple in the tank could be adjusted maybe it nots quite in the position its suppose to be I haven't found any info on Do's and dont 's on that. Maybe it doesn't matter how its positioned . Just something to think about while your in that area. Just dont drill any holes in your new tank on the flange around the tank, Join the Allison FB Page.

yea the tail lights are vw on mine, the back seat you may can make you a template from card board, I know on the short bodys the back of the seat does not go all the way to the back wall of the buggy you may see  some holes in the body where the brackets were screwed to the body. I may have some pics I sent another guy when he was putting his back together I think the space back there is for the top to tuck in when its down. What state are you in ?

I'm from North East Arkansas. And there is hardly any vw community around here that i know of. I meant to take some pictures of it tonight while i was working on the floor pans, but i think my phones mission in life is to raise my blood pressure, so no pics yet. I've joined the allison fb page last night. I've worked around cars all my life, so i feel pretty good about getting this one back on the road. Does anyone else with a allison daytona have the 3 lever parking/cutting brake combo? Mine has three chrome (used to be anyways, now they're more rust) levers, cutters on the outside, and a parking brake lever in the center. If someone has this same set up, can you take a pic of the boot for it?

I cut out the rusty floor pans tonight, picking up some fresh steel tomorrow for the replacements. 1 step at a time lol

Mine has snaps all around the back half, and down the inside of the sides. From what i've looked up, allisons had alot of different tops and covers for them
By Vince P 3261 Date 2014-11-25 10:53
Yea mine has the cutting brake levers and a boot, if you like I'll mail you the boot so you can see it and use it to get one made for yours just send it back when your done. Is yours Blue and white ? Do you see the Red and Gold one on the Samba hes wants 3750.00 I'm surprised it hasn't sold. I spoke to the guy about he said that he 's had it for 18 years. He did tell me that the floor was fiberglass to which was puzzling. Never heard of a Allison like that, wonder if it was a prototype all one piece body or someone layed fiberglass to cover up bad floor pans. But over all its looks pretty good.
By dusty l 4260 Date 2014-11-26 22:22
yea, blue and white. well, under 20 years of tree sap i believe its blue and white haha. You think you could take some pictures of that boot first? Maybe i could get an idea from that, i'd hate for yours to get lost/damaged in the mail.
By dusty l 4260 Date 2014-11-26 22:23
I dunno about a full fiberglass floor? seems odd, i dunno why they would go through the trouble with that.

Yea Ill get some pics up for you it might be a few days. Do you think your gel coat will survive a good cleaning compounding waxing ? I know the first one I had was rough and the guy I sold it to got the gel coat to come back I got to see the buggy in person at a vw car show it looked good from what it came from. Theres build pics on a web site called Ga Dubs under the 1960's catagory. It was red & white.
By dusty l 4260 Date 2014-11-27 02:04
I'm hoping the tree sap its coated in actually acted as a protectant haha, but i won't know til a get it with a buffer and find out. I hope it comes out pretty decent cause i love the stripes on it. I have a friend that used to work in fiberglass that offered to help with it when i get to that point, maybe he'll know some secrets to get it to quasi-good enough.
By Vince P 3261 Date 2014-11-27 11:04
Hey if you can get it close it will still look good yea I love the stripes to, with everything else new that youll have have on it I think it will look good. You ought to try a small area to see what it will do if you have some down time, cant wait to see some pics.

Hey not trying to tend to your business but you inquired about a gas tank, there's a place in Pa name Moyer fuel tank renu. They fix holes and line the tank ect. Just thinking the relocating the neck on a new one. You may be able to do that kinda of thing I know it would be tricky. But take the price of a new tank plus cost of relocating the neck and subtract that from their price then you would have that much in the tank.   I read some where at the Allison factory they use to hammer in the corners of the tank to get it to fit under the hood. I know I saw pics of my first Allison with the hood off and you could see the corners looked hammered. But I know money is tight for every one but if I had a specialized tank I'd look into that company.

well, i'll cross that bridge when i get to it. that's a ways down the road haha. working on replacing the floor pans right now. I found a superbeetle in a salvage yard a town over that i'm gonna try to buy for the engine and other odd bits. too bad it wasnt a standard beetle, coulda used alot more parts haha
By Vince P 3261 Date 2014-11-29 11:36
Yea I know its down the road for you, but what it takes to get to the gas tank for any repairs I'd dang sure make sure I had everything covered before putting it back together. cant wait to see your pictures.

Dusty, how are you trying to post pictures?  you need to post your reply first and then attach them. it will not work if you try before you post your message.  I know it seems backwards but that is how this forum software works. here is what that screen says:
File (max. size 1000000 bytes) Embed (only JPG, PNG and GIF images)
I have to make my normal pictures smaller by reducing them in something like "paint" on a windows machine. About 60% works best it seems.  Hope this helps

aright i think figured it out, don't mind my mess in my shop, i work best in chaos lol
By Vince P 3261 Date 2014-12-03 12:19
Looks like a good project glad you rescued it from where ever it was sitting, my shop gets messy to moving from one project to another. I just bought a 16 ft trailer to haul my buggy on so I'm going to be working on it to tweak somethings on it . Im in the crime business so I got to do something to it to make it stand out if ever gets stolen. I got some ideas .
By bob P 3255 Date 2015-01-24 01:58
Vince, I too was in the crime business for 30 yrs and also showed cars most of my life. Started showing cars in the late 50's, still do. I like the idea of making the car stand out (Pop). I've always felt that having a theme oriented car will get you points at a show. It's always worked for me, just a little edge on other "nice looking cars".

I'm in the process of designing my temporary spray booth som I can re-flake my "Lil' Bugger". Just waiting for the weather to break.............

I hope to finish in another 2 Half years I ll have my 30 in with the city total 23 at the PD. Used the buggy at Christmas to bring Santa around for a program called shop with a cop at Walmart it was a big hit. The chief said that he was impressed. I cant sit down on the city's retirement so I'm going to find something else to do I want be but 51 at that time, but I can draw my money and make a check somewhere else This will be about the time daughter gets out of high school We'll see .

Nice early Allison.  I've only seen one other with the pointy striped billboards.
I see the round nose. Any idea what year body?  68? I love how Kenny kept evolving.
The one I saw with those stripes was a short body I think.
Digging through pictures.
