so my 69 Manx has sprung a new oil leak.  The engine is a 1970 vw 1600 cc and has been used and abused over the years.  So oiling leaking is not a new thing, but today I noticed a large puddle of oil and started to investigate.  When running I can actually see a stream of oil coming from behind the carburetor and underneath the fan shroud.  Tried to get a good picture of the spot, but was not too successful.  Planning on digging into the engine next week when I have sometime, but just wondering if anyone has any early ideas of where it may be leaking from.  Thanks for any help

Sounds like the oil cooler or the seals to the oil cooler are leaking.

As stated only thing once fan and shroud is removed is the oil cooler and block.  So unless it is the block your fix should be simple.  Maybe when your remove the fan shroud yo can contemplate adding an external filter cooler kit.

Just a heads up that the picture is an early style cooler. You likely have the newer style "doghouse" oil cooler. You can verify by looking for a bump out on the front of the fan shroud (versus a perfectly flat front).

You will likely need to remove the motor. I doubt there is enough clearance to lift the shroud over the cooler.

Yup did not have a 1970 handy with oil cooler exposed, but same concept.

thanks for the help, luckily it was the seals for the oil cooler.  replaced the seals and no more leaks.
