When I purchased my buggy it had a fairly new gas tank installed as the guy said the old one sprung a leak and he opted to swap it out rather that try to repair the old one.  I can only get about 3 or 4 gallons of gas in.  Any more that that and it over flow.  I figured I would have to remove the filler neck weld a patch over it, relocate the filler neck to the center of the tank and cut a hole in the center of the hood, then patch the fiberglass and try to match the paint.  Is there a better way???  Is there a different year gas tank that would work so I could put in a decent amount of gas???  My filler neck is at the left lower end of the hood, see pics attached.  I really don't want to have to relocate the filler neck if I don't have to but 3 gallons of gas don't go far......

It sounds like your problem is the slope of the fuel tank is such that you can only put in a small amount of fuel with the factory filler location. Unfortunately there is no way to get more fuel into that tank. Relocating the filler up higher on the tank is your only option. If there is room under the hood you might be able to run a fuel cell and make your own filler neck with some elbows but that filler location is down pretty low and I think you'd end up with the same problem.

If you don't really use the back parcel tray, a spun aluminum tank in the rear would be an option also.

Kinda kludgy, but it doesn't require fiberglass work:
Fab a filler extension, about 6" long, with a male end (from a gas cap) and a female end (from a filler tube).  When you want a full tank, replace the cap with it and then put the cap on the extension; if you want a more streamlined look (short trips planned or a car show), remove it and use the cap the way you do now.

Free idea - worth at least that much!

Guys,
Thanks for the thoughts and advice.  I seen a number of buggies with filler necks where mine is located.  I can't help but wonder how they have the tank situated so it holds a decent amount of gas or maybe they only hold the 3 or 4 gallons as mine does???
I'll just have to plan on moving the gas tank's neck to the center of the hood.....

If anyone has any other suggestions I would gladly listen.....

  Thanks

Jim,

Our experience of building buggies what the problem is is the slope.  Yes.

What you need to do is as they stated above and move the filler and use a flip top filler.  It works and looks so much better.

2nd!  You need to shim the gas tank.
When you shim the tank it will raise the tank on the front which allows it to sit more level.

Even if you move the filler the gauge will never read right because you will always be on empty.
If you shim the tank it will sit more level.

That is a problem with almost every body out there.

If you shim the tank you will not have to move the filler neck unless you want to but you may have to cut the hole a little further back so the neck fits through the body.

Hope this helps.  You need anything else let me know and I would be more than happy to help you with your project.

I made the mistake of putting the filler down low.  I did it for looks.  Bad decision.

Dennis,
Yes your suggestions do help.  I will look to see if there is enough room to shim the tank before trying to relocate the filler neck.  That option sure would save a lot of work.  If I could just get a few more gallons in I would be happy.
I did look under the hood a while back and saw that at one time there was a filler neck in the center of the hood.  For the life of me I can't figure why they neatly filled the hole painted the hood and moved the filler to it's present location???????  The buggy has a new tank in it as the previous owner had a leak in the old tank and replaced it.  He is not the one that relocated the filler though.....
Thanks for the suggestion of leveling out the tank I will give it a try.....
