G-Day everyone, This is my first time ever post so be gentle.
I am about to start my first ever VW sand rail buggy, it is a Warrior kit. I will be using two donor bugs a 65 and a 74 super bug. The 74 1600cc motor. I just need a few tips. I have been told you need reduction boxes, but have read different. As well is the IRS rear end strong enough. It will be used off road, but in Australia where i am it is mainly pretty flat. Any help will be appreciated, I normally build motor cycles. Thanks
You don't need to find a reduction box set up. IRS will be plenty strong enough provided you are not going to abuse it too badly. That said, I know guys who can break steel bars in a sandbox. A lot depends on the driver of the car. If you beat the hell out of it chances are it will break. If it is going to be used in very rough terrain, you can buy pieces to re-enforce the trailing arms and you can buy heavy duty CV joints and axles. If you are going to raise the car up to any great measure you should look at Type 2 CV joints and flanges. These will allow the axles to run at greater angles and are also stronger. A link pin front end (from the 65) and IRS rear end will give you the best offroad setup using VW parts. Both are very strong and allow ride height changes without the problems that come with balljoints and swingaxles.
Welcome to the DBA brad
Thanks Brad
So what size rear wheel do you think i could go to without having to using reduction boxes.
Here's a gear ratio calculator. The most common box's had .89th gears and 4.12 R/P. Single side cover IRS box's had 3.88 R/Ps
http://johnmaherracing.com/calculators/gear-ratio-calculator/ You'll want to keep your engine rpm around 2500 for a majority of your driving, what ever gear you are in. That way the fan is spinning fast enough to cool the motor. you really don't want to drive with sustain engine speeds below 2500rpm. brad
Thanks Brad
You have been a great help. I will try and work that out. Cheers Browny Powered by mwForum 2.10.2 © 1999-2007 Markus Wichitill |
