I have a 1972 Deserter GT (I think). The car looks ok overall and it rides ok on a smooth road. If I drive over any bumps at speeds above 25 mph it feels like the entire body is going to come apart. All of the seams are tight and it looks as though the bolts in the floor pan are tight. It sounds like it's not attached somewhere (but I can't seem to find anything loose). Is this normal? I know this is a hard thing to diagnose with so little info but is there a common problem that I can look into?

You might need to check to balance a new wheels.
Get a high speed balance for your tires, could be BENT WH EEL

Is your floorpan OK? Check for rust at the frame head, floors and rear suspension. The body may be OK and the steel trying to support it may be shot. Tom

Great idea. I took a look at the wheels just now and I don't see any weights. I'll get that done right away. I'm sure I still have another problem but that may help. I'm sure this thing has a bunch of small issues that are adding up to a lot of noise.

I took a a look at the floor pan everything looks pretty good. I can't see anyplace where the front end (fiberglass) is attached to the floor pan. It looks like the front bumper is welded to the front axle beam and runs trough the body. That may be the banging that I'm hearing when I go over bumps. Is this the normal method of attachment for the bumper? This car is a hand me down that I'm still learning about. I'd like to get it driving smooth as silk, if that's possible.

My hood ratles really bad when I hit bumps. You might want to start there as well as any other panels that are bolted or screwed to the main body. Fiberglass flexes a lot so even though it looks well fastened it will still rattle.

Boy oh boy.. I would suggest having someone ride along with you with a flashlight and camera set to take video. It's nearly impossible to have someone looking at what is happening while you are driving in these little cars, but a flashlight and movie camera can be held in places we just can't get to going down the road. I would try to get some video and determine what is happening so you can formulate a good solution.
