where is the VIN

I can't locate the VIN. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

On a Type I it is under the Generator stand. You will need to remove your Type III fan shroud and you should be able to see it.

The VIN is different from the engine number. The VIN # is stamped into the transmission tunnel just forward of the shift coupler access cover.
Take it from someone that sold VW parts, The best way to obtain the correct parts for your distributor is to get the number directly off the distributor.

The type 3 engine number is stamped on the top of the case. If it isn't there you either have a replacement motor or a universal case. In either case it won't tell you what distributor you should have or it's specs. You don't need to remove the fan housing. Your engine is a 1500 single port and, like posted above, the best way to get the distributor specs is to pull the distributor and read the number on it.
