Bruce Meyers said that the thing that inspired him to design a lightweight body for the VW pan was one of the early heavy water pumper dune buggys that was nothing more than a stripped down frame.

Here is one on Ebay. These looked cool in their own right I guess.

Yes, that is certainly a "frame off" restoration. I had seen a few vintage pictures of frame type buggys. This is the first I had seen with the camera so close to the buggy. Pretty cool, but not for me.

I built one when I was in high school.  Everyone else in shop class was building scrolls and little tool box tray thingies and I built one of these.   Mine was built out of a 55 Ford with a six cylinder.  Didn't pull worth a crap.  No weight on the rear.  Around here they were called Skeeters.  No pics that I know of.
