At 4" x 2 3/4" that is way to big to match an actual ID tag. That is weird though, I wonder why anyone would want that, as if you knew your serial number to engrave it, you would have an authentic badge. Maybe use it as a dash plaque?

Just makes you wonder if the badges he sold on eBay for $1,100.00 were knock offs!

I didn't want to pipe up before, but if you had a set of badges, it wouldn't be hard to have them reproduced in another country. I also hope that his were real, and if not, I hope he gets discovered.  just my 1/5 of a dime.

If they are fake he should get paid with counterfiet money, LOL

He's in the UK. I don't think there is much that can be done about it except contacting Winnie and letter her know that this guy is making knock-off serial number plates.
By Mike S 1784 Date 2010-12-08 15:23
I would guess that they are real. Only because over in the UK there were selling those licensed Manx bodies up until a few years ago. And I am pretty sure they came with a full set of badges which I am sure they made extra for replacement (which could probably be purchased for $100 or so). Here is an email from the guy producing them (It talks about the badges and the metallic number plate):

Hi Mark,

we do not have website yet but you can go on manxclub.com to see more stuff.

We are the European manufacturer of the Classic Meyers Manx and the new Manxter.

We are manufacturing complete kits under Bruce Meyers licensing.
Each body gets a metallic numbered plate which is laminated under the back seat. We also sell the new 4 seaters Manxter in kit form, made in Europe and we are able to import the off road version, the Dualsport, if necessary.

The Classic Meyers Manx kit includes :
- very nice handbuilt body (one week of labor !) with one piece hood and dashboard reworked so it fits perfectly in the body. It has a new feature which is removable boxes under the back seat. Laminated during the molding process is the authenfication plate with a serial number given by Bruce Meyers.
- original hardtop with stainless hardware.
- complete windshield with tinted glass. The frame and hood are already drilled and ready to be bolted together.
- polished stainless steel roll bar.
- rechromed original style Dietz headlights.
- all the necessary brackets, stainless.
- all the nuts and special bolts, stainless steel.
- Manx logos (front and rear).
- Rear license plate support in stainless steel.

This Manx kit is priced at 3 600 euros without taxes, starting from Bordeaux. We can ship it or you can come to pick it up, we also have a dealer in Belgium where you can pick it up easily.
For your infor mation, we also should have a dealer in GB very soon.

Please, do not be fooled by cheap imitation of the Classic manx that is on british market. Quality is poor and any fees are going to Bruce Meyers which is not fair.

The Manxter kit is really complete and fairly priced at 7 100 euros without taxes.
The special launching price is 6 700 Euros without taxes.
It is far more complicate to produce, having not less than 60 differents parts, no including nuts and bolts ! This explains the higher price.
It comes with the special fiberglass back seats (uncovered), a full roll cage, including front and rear bumpers (stainless) and many differents brackets, and all the nuts and bolts, stainless.
Optionals are the hardtop and its hardware and the side pods.
The Manxter will bolt directly on a regular Beetle chassis, except 1302 and 1303, which save a lot of time in the building.
For the classic Manx, we can shortened a pan for you. This is carefully done, swaping the old stamped chassis floors by two flat metal plates, same gauge as the main chassis center, includind a square tube all around receiving inserts so you can bolt directly the body with no nuts under the chassis. The result is that the chassis is really rigid and not soft. Price for that is upon request but usually it is around 1 800 euros.

Let us know.

Even if that is the case...and he is a manufacturer's rep....selling two little emblems for that much is criminal.

The starting bid was only $49.99. In that case you have to blame the fools who placed over 40 bids to win them. Now that I know they're legit, you can't blame the seller.

Jim, I would have to agree with you, Being Legit, and starting at a reasonable price, he made a wicked good profit! that is the free market principle!  Glad That I am not in the position to want or even need something like that.  Of course, I am very frugal(read cheap!) and poor besides.

just me rattling my jaw.

For anyone interested that size and style of id plate is identical to those fitted to the authorized Manx kits still for sale in France...

By jackymorel Date 2011-01-18 19:06
Hi buggy maniacs. I am the one who had the right from Bruce Meyers to make a Manx continuation in France. As somebody talked about me and printed the words I was sending to anybody interested by a kit, I must say this :
Bruce makes plates exclusively for us, each of these plates are numbered and fixed on the kit when we deliver it. We NEVER NEVER sold a plate without the rest of the kit. We buy these plates from Bruce giving him a fee for the work he did by designing the most beautifull toy ever made.
I was not able to find the Ebay sale but I can say that if somebody paid $1 000 for a fake plate, he lose his money ! Original plates are well known and our plates look exactly like the one you have here...We sold around 100 kits in 13 years.
So no more bad things about what I've done here. You can ask Bruce directly and he will say that the kits we make are the best ever produced...If you have anymore question regarding the european production, just write me ! Thank you. Jacky

There is also a guy from Germany that sells Meyers Manx fake ID plates on eBay at this time. I've tried to contact Winnie Meyers about it but I think she has problems with her mailbox?

The problem with the Meyers' Manx mailbox is off & on.  Because of thier remote location, they only were able to get dial up coverage, after that became unworkable, they switched to satellite.  That can be unreliable due to weather, and that is when they have problems.  Also - they get invited to many events, and that can cause them to be not in thier home location to work the e-mails.  Tom

Jacky,

I didn't mean any disrespect to you for my post above. There was actually two different conversations going on about the ID plate with out any numbers and a front nose badge.

For the ID plate  I didn't mean to infer that you produced the ID plate or had anything to do with it. At that point in our discussion I didn't realize that the ID for sale on ebay was what the European Manx ID plates looked like. I was still guessing that it might be a dash plaque or something like that.

When I quoted your email, it was meant to show that the licensed Manx's bodies came with both a front nose badge and the "manx" rear emblem. And that the badges (not the ID plate) that the person sold on ebay didn't necessarily need to be counter fit as they were produced for your licensed bodies and you might have been allowed to sell them separately to proven original Manx owners as Winnie did here in past until she ran out of stock. (I have a set of these purchased from Winnie for my original Manx).

So again, my post was not meant to disrespect you or the beautiful Manx bodies you produce on the other side of the pond. And I have no doubt that the ID plate that came up for sale had nothing to do with you or your production of Meyers Manx bodies.

Mike
