So in the Subbug forum, we've been trying to flip the R&P of a Subaru transaxle to use with a rear engined VW...

Here we try to flip a VW R&P or swap cams on a Corvair engine to get the rotation right...

Why not run a Subaru transaxle with a Corvair engine?  No flipping, no swapping, no problem handling the power and you get 5 speeds with an IRS set up.  Just add the block off for the rear output shaft and an adapter.

Anyone heard of an adapter to go from a Corvair engine to a Subaru transaxle? I have a spare 5-speed sitting around, but no Corvair engine to hook it too. (I should have kept that Corvair powered Imp John bought).

That wouldn't work with a mid engined set-up! :-)

Paul - the Subaru trans would make a good fit for a mid-engine trans (using a "normal" rotation engine) since that the is the normal location of the trans in a Subaru - behind the engine.
I'm guessing you're talking about putting it in a rear engine set-up - but with a backwards rotation Corvair to get it going the right way?  Sounds like the same old problem of running the trans backwards.  I guess it could be done, but might not last too long?

You'd have to convince Kennedy to come up with a new adapter set - Corvair to Subaru!

Of course you know the "right" way to do it... use the newly available reverse cut ring and pinion gearset from Australia and then reverse-rotate the Corvair!  Sort of a double reverse!

Hmmm. Isn't that a double-negative? Does the saying two wrongs don't make a right apply here? :-)

Somebody is missing the point here.  The Coarvair turns oposite to the VW, so does the the Subaru transaxle.  Put them both in a rear engine set up and everything works.  You just need an adaptor set-up that has never been made before.   Tom

Not at all tom. I was trying to be funny by adding confusion to an already confusing topic. I should reserve my humor some times. :-)

OK, it all makes sense now!  Tom

Can't help it.....  :-)

So if you wanted to run the Subaru trans mid-engine, but had mistakenly installed the reverse cut ring and pinion gearset, which way would the Corvair need to turn to give five 5 forward speeds??   My brain hurts!  hehehehe

That would be an expensive mistake!  It is great that such a product has been made (reverse rotation ring gear) and opens up many new possibilites.  Tom

I should not have read the replies this early in the morning... now MY head hurts!

So while we are dreaming of adapters, how about an adapter to bolt a Corvair engine to an automatic Subaru transaxle?  Paul...
