i've been wondering theres lots of baja bugs out there racing in the baja 1000 and other races. the fiberglass dune buggy replaced the baja for off roading. Then the rail came and replaced it. im jw why is there a class for baja bugs and rails but no class for fiberglass buggies.

They were going to set up a class for Duel Sport Manxters if enough people wanted to race.  They needed 4 - 5 cars from what I remember and limited modifications.  Basicly, Manxter #1 Duel Sport with a small air cooled VW engine.  Tom

Most racing is about classes and there is too much variety in buggies to put them in classes.  SCCA auto crossing puts them in A Modified because the body has been replaced.  This puts you up against 400 hp custom race cars.

As TOm described, a Manxter class with a specific engine would work, but you have to have enough to make a class then...

Someone will jump in with the safety related issues here I am sure...  Bruce and a Tow'd come to mind.

Hi Paul,

Our Sanctioning body has switched our rules on car classes to conform with the SCCA. I haven't raced since
the change and have been trying to class my car on the SCCA website but can't find any Mod class that fits. Are you certain of the A Mod class designation ? Don't want to offend you, just want to be certain. Our club used to be
from the "run what you brung"  school where we built the cars we wanted and worried about classing them later. Now guys won't put quick shift kits in their daily driven Hondas cause it will bump them up a class for the 20 minutes a year they race. As of  late the rule nazis have taken all the fun out of it. First they made us run mufflers, now it's SA helmets (although I can drive in a thong and tube top) A friend of mine said my car might actually be illegal for racing any more S#$%, that's why I ask if A-Mod is for certain. Sorry for the rant

THANKS, brad

THONG & A TUBE TOP
I don't think anybody wants to see that !!
That would probably put you in the no class group   lol

I don't even want to see that LOL. Just pointing out the silliness of the rules :-)

Last time I autocrossed the buggy with SCCA, they had the "rule experts" converge on my little buggy and told me AM which is the highest of the mod classes-basically anything goes.  So I figured why not throw a 300HP turbo motor in...  I have looked at AM on the SCCA web site and it seems to fit. but this was 5 years ago and the rules constaintly change.

Best part was I was the only modified to run street tires...

Also, some places make you run topless-I don't think bikini tops are allowed :-)

Check out the recent SCCA Rules under 18.4 "Specials" for AM. http://cms.scca.com/documents/Solo_Rules/2009_Solo_Rules.pdf

Also look above.  If you adhere to certain rules, you can squeeze into BM or CM, but that's about it. Try searching the rules for "buggy" or "deserter" to see some interesting historical results.
