Hey gang - I've got a dilemma I hope someone can help solve.
Doing some plumbing work on the engine - turbo plumbing.  Working on the turbo oil drain, I was really wanting to use the OEM drain connection in the back of the block - the formed drain tube that sticks straight up and is pressed/glued(?) and bolted to the engine case.  Now with the turbo fitted I found that the drain angle to the engine isn't that great - just a few inches down over about 16" between the turbo drain fitting and engine fitting.  In the tubo I've got a custom drain adapter and 90 degree AN fitting, so the drain is coming out of the turbo and pointing the hose towards the engine.  That part is good.  However, to make that AN10 hose bend the 90 degrees to go down into the block oil drain, it causes the hose to bow up - and we all know oil doesn't drain up!

So after planning a couple different ideas, I finally realized to make the factory drain work, I was going to need a short 90 degree formed hose, or consider pulling out the factory drain and re-doing the whole mess!  Really trying to avoid that!

I dug around in the box of old parts/hoses/hard lines, etc. left-over from stripping down the JDM engine and guess what??  I found the perfect solution!  EXCEPT - it's old and hard as a rock!

So the big question from all this dribble is:  Can anyone identify this hose????  Clues - I'm pretty sure it is from the oiling system, 5/8" ID matching the original factory oil drain tubes - and it "might" be the original turbo drain from the OEM-JDM set-up?

If I can find this part new at a dealer or on-line somewhere - all will be rosy again!

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

That could be from either the turbo cooling water return line, or the heater core return line. More likely the heater core, but both have 90's where they go back into the thermostat housing....

Hmmm, thought I recognized it as the 90 coolant hose that goes from the oil cooler (Big ugly unit on top of the oil filter) to the block, but the dimensions appear to be a little off. I think the cooling hose from the oil cooler is only about 2.5" and it looks like yours is 3.5"

Maybe by process of elimination you'll get there.

Jeff, I know you didn't ask this but, On my engine, the original oil return line is plugged and there is an AN-10 fitting welded to the oil pan. There is enough room to have a very nice sweep right down to the oil pan. With strategic positioning prior to tightening the fitting, the hose is perfectly out of the way.

I'll snap a few pictures.... If anything, it's another option.

-10 hose is 15" along the braid both ends have 45deg fittings
AN-10 fitting is approx 2.5" up from bottom of pan, centered side to side.

Thanks Jay and Terry.  Yea - I opted to "not" have Outback (now Outfront) install the AN fitting in the oil pan when they shortened it, maybe not such a great idea in hindsight!
Also a little more problematic with the mid-engine layout - as the trans is in the way for a simple hose connection in the rear.

I think I've identified that hose though.  I started looking at some old pics I took of the engine and came across this one.  I was actually looking for something showing the original oil cooler that was mentioned - as the hose definitely has some oily residue inside.

A shot of the original PCV system, which I've since modified.  The hose definitely looks like the top 90 degree hose coming out of the "F" fitting.  Has the same markings from the clamps. I don't know if this PCV system is identical to the USDM WRX?  Or other factory turbo motors?  I guess its worth checking out at a dealer.

Finding this, or a similar shaped "formed" hose seems to be the only "bolt-on" option at this point.

Thanks again!

Well,
I gave up trying to find a diagram of a Subaru PCV system which might match the JDM engine - after an extended Googling session.  I'm afraid going down to the local dealer would likely just get blank stares and "we don't carry parts for that engine..." responses.  Sent a note to Outfront, as I'm sure they've seen LOTS of these systems that they've removed for sand buggies.  We'll see what they might come up with.  I did find a special order Samco hose, which can handle oil exposure - probably $40 for that little hose though!  Lets see what I can do on the inexpensive side first.

We bought a piece of the oil resistant Samco hose.  It looks like the other stuff but has a black inside lining.  It was about the same price and we use it for the oil breather system.  Tom

Tom,
If you don't mind my asking - where did you get the hose from?  There is a special formulation silicone hose that will withstand oil (and I believe fuel?), unlike the regular Silicone hose materials.  I guess it's primarily in the inner liner as you mentioned.  I've found this special hose from a couple of vendors, but only Samco seems to make it in the smaller 5/8" size and in the 90 degree elbow.
The only issue I can see with the Silicone hose is it's a little softer than regular rubber.  I will be connecting with a hose nipple to Aeroquip socketless hose, which is kind of stiff (but fit the OD on the oil drain perfectly at 5/8").  Don't want to pinch or put too much strain on the silicone elbow hose?  Might not be enough of a difference to worry about.

We bought all of our Samco hose from Boost Controller, http://www.boostcontroller.com/ .  They did not stock the oil resistant hose. so we used the regular type for a month or two until it arrived.  I still have over 2' of the 16MM stuff left over if you need any that size.  You have to buy it in 3' lenghts.  Jegs / Summit also carries some of that stuff.  You need the Samco p/n to search for price and availablity.  It is made in Europe, so if it is not in stock, delivery can be a problem.  One other note, they do not recommend the use of conventional worm style hose clamps, as it will cut into the hose, you must use band style at every connection.  This raises the price even more.  Tom

Thanks Tom,
I was planning on getting my blow off valve from boostcontroller, probably in next month's "buying spree" - this month it's mostly exhaust stuff!  I like the Samco BOV, want to run a re-circulating valve feeding back into my air cleaner tube to help keep the noise down.  The Samco looks good, and not nearly as expensive as some other brands.

I'll keep them in mind for the elbow too.  I too used standard silicone hoses/elbows for my custom PCV system, now thinking I should probably be changing them out for the right kind of hoses.....  I'll check with Summit/Jegs as well.
