This was the first buggy My wife and I built in 1998

I just joined and I have a Bandit. I have owned it since 1995.

I was going through my literature and I've been meaning to scan an article I found in a trade magazine from long ago. A very important article for you Bandit guys. This is pretty much something that never would have seen the light of day as it is pretty much a throw away flier. I probably have the only copy in the world. I can't wait to share it so here goes !

Please don't kill me, my bandit buggy is no more a bandit :-( , more a SGS (my initials) custom... All I could see was the nose getting caught off road so it got bobbed... It was a long tough decision but I still have the parts I cut off.

By Jay H (X-20) (ManxVair CC) Date 2009-09-12 12:10
Samuel, I would call it the PUG. If the MANX can be named after a cat because of the short rear, yours can easily be named after a dog with the short snout due to the short front.

Thanks Jay, I kind of like that name for it! Was it wrong for me to have done though? I tried looking for another hood for it, but the junkyard owner wouldn't let the random one he had go... And honestly, I Really like it. No one really had a bandit, and really no one has one like this I don't think....
By John S 2 Date 2009-09-13 00:52
I have the license frame from ebay.

I was the high bidder. It arrived in an envelope with no padding and was bent in half. Of course the 35 year old pot metal broke trying to straighten it.

I currently have it on the Boss Bug.

I also have a really cool 17x17 color brochure that came with an LP !

Really cool stuff.
I need to get the big brochure scanned somewhere with a big flatbed.
Very cool article Bart! Thanks for sharing it here.

Holy crap - Check out this thread on the Samba. Apparantly Dunebuggy Inc is still in business in some form or another. They have a new Bandit (Bandit 2) that they sell through Pacific Customs. Maybe you guys can still get early Bandit pods or hoods ? I guess the mold for the earlier version is in bad shape.

I know I should keep my coments to myself but the front on the one on ebay is just pure ugg ly maby if the headlight were forward it would help but that buggy is all out of proportion, looks like they should have broke the mold on that one, even the side pods look like bath tubs hanging off the sides, I have heard of some things being so ugly that they are pretty but I dont think even a buggy make over would help that one, sorry just couldnt help myself,      Ken..........
By mwmanx Date 2009-09-29 20:27
Sometimes we should keep our comments to ourselves....but what were they thinking? Wheres the saw zaw?
By Allison Daytona Ken Date 2009-09-29 23:36
I figured out what it looks like from the front, one of those blow fish, some people around here call them toad fish, you know the fish that blows its self all up, side pods would be really cool if you make them slide out and have water jets in them, sort of like a red neck hot tub. I am talking about that new one on ebay not the old ones they are cool.
By Wade M 1848 Date 2009-09-30 15:50
Not sure if the eBay bandit buggy is, a good example of the cars Dan builds. I purchased a Bandit II body and my buddy and I did the rest. It is a mid travel car with a bus tranny and a 2.5 SOC Subaru. The car is used on the street, dirt, sand and is pulled behind the motor home on our family vacations.

What makes anyone think that the so-called Bandits being currently made in California have anything to do with the real Bandits made in Denver around 1970 ?
By Gary S 2283 Date 2010-12-17 05:16
OK, I'll answer myself.  "NOTHING"!!!!!!!   I talked to John Gould himself, and, again, the answer is "NOTHING"!!!!!!!  The truck parts people in California did not call him and ask if they could use the name,  and the truck parts buggys have nothing physical in common with real Bandits either.
By Bill S 2509 Date 2010-12-17 20:22
My dune buggy club has the original molds for the Bandit buggies that were made in Englewood, CO at Dune Buggy, Inc.  The company out in California has nothing to do with the originals.  We have restored the molds to a useable form and one of our members is in the process of making a car from the original molds.  I am meeting with a former employee of the original company to learn more about the cars.

Bandit Forum Gang,

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased this buggy a few years ago and have tried doing some research on it. Best I can tell, it's also a Bandit but am not 100% sure. The front is similar to the ones pictured here, but the rear is different. Can anyone shed any light on this buggy and advise if this is in fact a Bandit or a different type of buggy.

Thank you.

Sorry, but I'm 100% sure that it's just not a Bandit, but the curious resemblance to a Bandit in the front point and the rear box might make it related.  It bears some resemblance to the Carriage,  which was made alongside the Bandit, and before them,  there were six versions of the Wolverine, but I only know what two of them look like.  Hopefully, John Gould can fill in the big gaps when he writes his book.  I'm leaning towards Carriage.  They were used a lot by Shriners.
By Bill S 2509 Date 2011-02-14 17:40
This is a Carriage if it is on a full size pan.
By Gary S 2283 Date 2011-02-19 06:22
I have also seen a true Bandit with a full length chassis.  It was for sale, in Dacono, I think.
By Gary S 2283 Date 2011-07-24 03:00
A few posts back, there was a reference to a Bandit on E-bay having the headlights too far back.  The E-bay ad was long gone then, and it's still long gone.  I want to address this headlight problem.  The Bandit, and the late Wolverine was designed without the usual little pods to mount headlights upon.  Instead, it was supposed to use headlights with brackets that swivel backwards, and bolt to the front edge of the fenders. This put the headlights in a lower position than the more common version, and it looks BETTER.  In the ID section, there's a pink Bandit with this correct setup.  Sadly, a lot of Bandits and Wolverines didn't get the better looking correct treatment; they got the extra ugly treatment with standard hotrod headlights on pedestals high above the centers of the fenders.

Hi, I'm new to the site and I just purchased a Bandit 2 buggy with a 68 reconditioned pan. I purchased the buggy from a guy that purchased it in 2006 and never finished.

By Gary S 2283 Date 2013-02-01 03:48 Edited 2013-02-01 04:38
Ya, I find that "2" to be suspicious.  Dune Buggy Inc.  never used a "2" to describe any Bandit.  The guy who makes stolen name Bandits has been known to use a "2".  Cars with stolen names don't belong under the heading of Bandit.  The buggies currently made in California have to pick a different name.  Perhaps Bundert, or Badnut.  And they need to get their own heading.

---- and NOW there's a picture.  That's no Bandit.  Never was.  Never will be.
By Steve L 3544 Date 2013-02-03 17:37
Gary S 2283,
Not sure I understand your post. Are you saying the buggy I have is not a "Bandit 2" dune buggy? The buggy I have is pictured on http://banditdunebuggy.com/ website.
By Gary S 2283 Date 2013-02-09 06:32
That website is using a stolen name.  Your buggy is using a stolen name.
By Brian B 1822 Date 2013-02-09 20:33
Not stolen, just resurected from the dead pile. Nice Bandit 2 you have there. Keep us up to date on your build

Maybe I do not have a "dog" in this discussion, but Really.
John Gould(I think that is the Name of the original builder.  Address listed for them was:
Dune Buggy Inc.
3730 South Jason
Denver, Colorado
80110
This info was pulled off the net from other sites.   Supposed to have built Wolverines before building the Bandit. From what I can find, he Quit around early 80's.  How long is a Name Trade marked, if it ever was?  What I also read, was that Mr Gould was "writing" a book sometime in the 2003-05 time Frame.  If he is alive and wrote his book, does someone have it or contact with him?  If the Name was Not Copy Righted, Then a current company CAN use the same name. Even if it was Copy Righted, has the Copy Right expired? The Nose on the "new" Bandit 2 is different.
Why jump on someone who has bought a Good looking Dune Buggy.   The Question of Real is Moot. Suffice it to say the Early Bandit has not been produced since sometime in the 80's. So Call them the First Bandits and the "new" ones ARE called Bandit 1(production ended 2010) and the Bandit 2.   They are located in California, here is their web site: http://www.banditdunebuggy.com./

Hi everybody !   I call myself "Brian B 1822".  It's a name I resurrected from the dead pile !  This can't possibly step on anybody's toes,  because I resurrected it from the dead pile !  There is no more Brian B 1822 to care if I resurrect his name from the DEAD PILE !

And Lloyd B 2301 ruins your case by ADMITTING that the stolen name Bandit should go by a different name !

You people are rude, and you show no interest in ARCHIVING the Dune Buggys of the past       (they are ALL in your dead pile, you know).  It sounds like you hope to protect the MONEY you have invested in Turner Truck Parts.  Aren't there more appropriate websites for that ?  REALLY.  Truth is not moot !  Truth is all.
By Lloyd B 2301 Date 2013-02-11 15:59
Really Gary?   Do you have more info on Mr Gould? Or even his Children?  Do you have info on his "Book" if it was written?  Why are you Painting THIS site and all the good folks as RUDE, it is yourself who might also be determined to be rude.  Address you comment to ME not the other folks.   ADDRESS the questions I posited.  Both in this post and my last one.  I own a Business, the name appears on the Internet at least 8 other times, Should I be upset that these folks are using MY Business Name?  They are in other areas of the country.  My Business Name is NOT copyrighted, so they have a Right to use the same name just not in my state/regional area. Oh, by the way, MY Business has been in the same location for well over 85 years, so, by your logic, that would make it the ONLY one to exist.  Back to MR. Gould, or his children, Feel free to provide a contact, I would be more than happy to contact him and get his take on the Controversy.
Please Gary, If you think that my Questions are Wrong and my Thoughts are Wrong, address your comments TO ME.
Please, Answer my Questions/Statements.  AGAIN, I say you were the one that was being RUDE.  How about I Say, this, If the Owner of This Site, has a problem with what I have put Down, he is more than welcome to contact me, He does have my personal e-mail.
I am Lloyd Bledsoe, I live in Idaho.  There, you now have information to look me up.

Jeez Brian, never knew you passed on to the other side LOL Don't know what the problem is here????? If a company no lonoger makes a product for over 2 decades and then someone come along and makes a similar product and calls it a similar name what's the problem???? The original manf. is long gone and it''s a cool name.

As far as not archiving dunebuggy models. Name a site that does more than this one!!!!!!!

Steve, some People are real passionate about Buggies.  I Like my Max, and My Dean Jeffries Kyote.  Hope to make it to his shop to get it verified and certified this spring.

My buggy is 80% complete. Going to rebuild engine this winter. The engine runs good but no power and puffs a little smoke.

By Steve L 3544 Date 2016-01-15 02:54
The Dune Buggy all complete. Just put a new 1776 longblock in this last summer. Still fine tuning the dual Weber ICT's but runs pretty good.
