the Dune Buggy Archives

Here is an experiment with metalflake. First I painted the tag blue. You can see the difference the base color makes in the final product. (The Cox buggy is the same flake with a black base color) Then I sprayed it with clear. While the clear was still wet I poured the metalflake over it and removed all loose flake. Then I sprayed many more coats of clear. Waited for the clear to dry then wet sanded until the high spots were gone then sprayed a couple finish coats of clear. All of this was done with rattle cans. I'm sure that a better finish could be obtained using automotive paint. I believe this way of doing flake is refered to as the dry flake method. There are special dry flake guns for blowing the flake on. The same process could be done with gelcoat. Gelcoat does not flow out as smooth as paint and would probably need to be sanded and buffed
